Our volunteer program for individual clinic-based PT provides an opportunity to mentor those looking into or preparing for a career in physical therapy, rather than a true need for volunteers.
Volunteer activities within the Physical Therapy program includes but is not limited to the following:
- Assisting the physical therapist in treatments, as directed, by interacting with the children in a specific way and by obtaining equipment, helping to set up/clean up after treatment, videotaping treatments, and preparing materials.
- Assisting with maintenance of equipment, such as cleaning and organizing toys and gross motor equipment.
Volunteer Requirements: Volunteers should be playful, and willing to get down on mats, be silly and engage with the children on their level.
Minimum Time Commitment: Shadow a physical therapist for 2-4 hours per week for a number of months to be able to watch therapy progress. We also provide one-time opportunities to shadow a PT, depending on your availability and that of a therapist with availability for an observer. You would be eligible to do this for a partial day.
Maximum Time Commitment: 80 total hours
Days of the Week: Monday through Friday, 8am-6pm, depending upon the current needs of the PT department.
Age Requirement: 16 years and older
Volunteer Locations: PTN’s Torrance or Long Beach location
Qualification Requirements: A minimum time commitment of once a week for three hours for a three to four month period.
* Volunteers who have already completed their undergraduate degree and are currently working and volunteering to earn hours for their PT school applications are given priority. Next, we look at those still working on their undergraduate degrees, when they will be applying to school, etc.
